Barcelona is known for striking, unique architecture, amazing food, and a rich cultural heritage. If you’re visiting Spain, or even just have a stopover, exploring Barcelona is a must! You’ll love spending a day in Barcelona.
Admittedly, I spent more than just a day in Barcelona, but I’ve crafted this itinerary with the top things to do in mind for a first trip. You’ll find options and suggestions you can pick and choose from in this one day Barcelona itinerary.

Tips for One Day in Barcelona
Before we get into the itinerary, here are a few tips if you only have a day in Barcelona!
- Book tickets in advance for attractions. Barcelona is a very popular destination, and if you don’t book in advance, there’s a high chance at least one thing on your list will be sold out, and if it’s not sold out, there’s a chance the line will be extremely long.
- Public transit is easily accessible and available at top spots around Barcelona. Both its bus system and metro are cheap and easy to navigate. It’s much easier to walk and use public transit if you’re only spending one day in Barcelona.
- Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowds and popular tourist areas. I always bring my Lululemon belt bag for this reason!
- Barcelona is hot in the summer! Stay hydrated and wear flowy clothes that you will be comfortable in all day. I recently bought this dress, and I think it’s perfect!
- Bring great walking shoes you can wear all day. My favorite is Taos Footwear!
- If you want to do a lot of attractions in Barcelona, consider the Go City Sightseeing Pass. It includes entry to so many of the top sites and can save you a lot of money! Check out the Barcelona pass here.
Where to Stay
We stayed in the Eixample neighborhood, and it’s the perfect location, especially if you have limited time. It’s full of streets of stylish boutiques, bars, and restaurants. We stayed at Negresco Princess and really enjoyed our stay – definitely recommend staying there.
The neighborhood is close to public transit and top sites like Sagrada Familia and the Gothic Quarter. There’s an iconic square, Plaça de Catalunya, nearby with tons of shopping and food!
Breakfast: Alsur Cafe
Start off your day with a Barcelona at Alsur Cafe. This cafe has two locations in Barcelona and some great breakfast options. Their motto is LQQCQ (lo que quiere cuando quiere, or “whatever you want whenever you want it”).
If you want to have breakfast here, you’ll easily find a spot outside for a coffee and empenadas (or more!).
Morning: Explore Outdoors (two options)
In the morning, choose how to explore and spend your morning outside in Barcelona! It’s a beautiful city with great parks and outdoor spaces; choose one of the most famous to explore, depending on what interests you most.
I suggest spending the morning outside, where you may find less shade and walk around more, as it can be very hot in Barcelona later in the day.
Option 1: Park Güell
Park Güell was initially planned as a residential area with homes for the wealthy. When this failed, it became a city park and remains famous today! The architecture was designed by Antoni Gaudí, so if you’re looking for something classic and want to explore unique architecture, this is the right choice for you!
To explore on your own, I’d recommend the official Park Guell app, which includes maps, audio guides, and information on visiting. Tickets start at 18 €, and you can purchase in advance to save time.
To explore with a tour, consider a skip the line guided tour. This option includes transportation, lasts an hour, and takes you through some of the top sites in the park! After the guided portion of the tour, you get time to explore on your own.
This is included in the Go City Sightseeing Pass.
Option 2: Tibidabo Amusement Park
Tibidabo Amusement Park is an amusement park located on Tibidabo in the Collserola Ridge in Barcelona. It is one of the oldest still functioning amusement parks in the world (the oldest is just outside Copenhagen). It was built in 1899 and offers sweeping views of Barcelona.
This was a great way to spend a morning in Barcelona! It was not as crowded as many top sights in the city center, and we loved the different rides and views we got here.
Getting here is a bit of a trek from Barcelona, which is why it is often not crowded. Beware of that if you decide to go on your own! It takes about an hour on public transit, or you can rent a scooter and get there in about 30 minutes.
One of its most famous rides is called Avió, which is a plane modeled after the first commercial aircraft flight from Madrid to Barcelona in 1927. Tickets start at 25 euros for entry; if you want the rides included, it’s 44 euros.
You also have to visit the Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor while here! This basilica is beautiful and offers even more stunning views. Entry to the basilica is free, but to go to the top, it’s 8 euros, which I would recommend.

Mid-Day: Explore a Neighborhood
After spending your morning outdoors, choose a neighborhood to explore mid-day! There are two options here, depending on the vibe and feel you want to get for the city. One is more historic, one more modern. We’ll start with the classic option, then move on to another fun neighborhood to consider.
Option 1: History in the Gothic Quarter
The charming Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gòtic, has narrow medieval streets filled with trendy bars, clubs and Catalan restaurants. This is definitely an area of Barcelona worth visiting.
As the historical and spiritual heart of the city, you’ll experience over 2,000 years of history through a walkable, photogenic labyrinth of ancient Roman walls, towering medieval cathedrals, and lively, secret plazas.
You could easily spend time here just walking around, stopping into different shops and taking in the architeture, but I’d consider doing more than that while here! Below are some things to consider:
- Visit Museu d’Història de Barcelona to see the remains of the Roman city
- Explore Plaça Reial, an elegant, palm-lined square featuring early lampposts designed by Antoni Gaudí.
- See the Barcelona Cathedral (Cathedral of Santa Eulalia with classic Catalan Gothic architecture.
- Walk El Call, the ancient medieval Jewish quarter.
- See Bishop’s Bridge (Pont del Bisbe) for an iconic neo-Gothic bridge perfect for photos
- Join a Guru Walk (love their free tour options, leave a tip!) for a guided experience
Option 2: Shopping in/near Eixample
Eixample is full of great shopping options if you want to spend some time enjoying its plazas and architecture. The options below are close together and on the edge between the Eixample and the Gothic Quarter.
You could visit one or all of these, depending on how much shopping you’re trying to do. They are within walking distance of each other.
- Passeig de Gràcia: One of the most iconic streets in Barcelona with Gaudi architecture. This is a great option to take in unique architecture and shop (or just window shop) at famous high-end luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Prada.
- Avinguda Portal de l’Àngel: This is a bustling, pedestrian-only street near Plaça de Catalunya, with options for everyday brands like Zara, Primark, and Mango, as well as souvenirs.
- La Rambla: The city’s most iconic tree-lined promenade, perfect for souvenir shopping.
While in this area, make sure you stop at La Boqueria market for some lunch. This is the most famous food market in Barcelona, with so many food options!
Afternoon: Sagrada Família
Afternoon, you have no option, you must visit Sagrada Familia while in Barcelona! This iconic cathedral is massive, beautiful, and truly unique. No one day Barcelona itinerary is complete without it.
The church has been under construction for 144 years; the final arm of the glass cross was installed in 2026, officially making it the Tallest Church in the World. There is still construction ongoing on the interior.
Rather than using traditional Gothic flying buttresses, Gaudí designed the basilica like a living forest. The columns branch out like trees to support the heavy weight, and the ceiling opens up into floral canopies.
The lines here can get extremely long, and it regularly sells out. In peak season, it sells out almost every day. Get an advanced ticket, and with just a day, I’d highly recommend skip the line tickets as well (consider a tour!). We added on the ticket to ascend to the top and loved getting up close to the exterior architecture. Would recommend!

Early Evening: Drinks on the Beach
If you aren’t familiar with Spanish culture, you’ll find out pretty quickly that dinner is late, like after 9 pm late! So, after your Sagrada Familia, instead of heading to dinner, head to the beach for some drinks and views.
There are tons of places along the beach to enjoy drinks and good music. Many places will have a DJ and drink specials starting around 4-5 pm. The beach in Barcelona is not the best in Spain, but the views are nice and relaxing!
We went to Bo Kaap, inspired by the neighborhood in Cape Town. It provided a fun, unique experience!
Evening: Tapas and Rooftops
As the sunsets and it gets closer to evening, head to a great spot for tapas and take in a rooftop view of Barcelona.
Tapas:
- Cerveceria Catalana: A lively tapas bar known for its extensive selection of traditional Spanish dishes, vibrant atmosphere, and a bustling open kitchen.
- Tast Gastro Bar: Modern spins on classic Spanish tapas in a relaxed setting.
- Els Sortidors del Parlament: This tapas and wine bar has a relaxed vibe in a former motorcycle garage.
- Bar Canete: A popular tapas bar with a menu featuring traditional Catalan dishes and a selection of fresh seafood.
Rooftops:
- Negresco Princess: We stayed at this hotel and loved the rooftop. To swim with panoramic views over the Sagrada Familia and the Barcelona skyline, you need to stay at the hotel, but drinks are an option for everyone.
- Barcelo Raval: 360-degree views of Barcelona open year-round. You can order classic cocktails, along with wine, beer, snacks, and some tapas from the B-Lounge Restaurant inside the hotel.
- Hotel Barcelona Edition: Beautiful rooftop with a loungy vibe and great views across the city. You can get great Mediterranean food and signature cocktails here.
- Mirador Torre Glòries Skydeck: Spectacular glass skyscraper with amazing, photo-worthy views across Barcelona. Included in Go City Sightseeing Pass.
