Watch a Classic Movie at Rooftop Cinema Club

If you want something truly unique and fun for couples in NYC, then this is the perfect spot to go. Rooftop Cinema Club is an open-air rooftop that hosts nightly outdoor movies and other fun activities.

They have multiple locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, each offering a different view and movie during the warmer months. But movies aren’t the only thing to highlight here!

In addition to movies, you’ll want to arrive early to enjoy drinks, food, and lawn games before the movie. When the movie begins, they’ll give you noise-cancelling headphones so you don’t have to worry about noise, and you can cuddle up with your date!

I’d highly recommend this for any couple looking for something unique in NYC for an evening.

Discover Filming Locations in Central Park

Most couples on a trip to NYC would opt for a horse drawn carriage ride or a picnic in Central Park, but for something unique and fun, couples can reenact scenes from famous movies and TV shows that were filmed in the park.

Here are some of the TV shows/movies filming locations in Central Park and what scene to re-enact as a couple:

  • Central Park was used as a Gossip Girl filming location for a lot of scenes so you can stroll like Lilly and Rufus, feed the ducks and go ice skating at Wollman Rink like Blair Waldorf or even re-enact a wedding scene
  • Chat on the benches along The Mall like Marisa and Christopher from Maid in Manhattan
  • Go running in the park like Rachel and Phoebe from F.R.I.E.N.D.S
  • Feed the birds near Gapstow Bridge like Kevin McCallister from Home Alone II: Lost in New York
  • Rent a boat on the Boating Lake (near Loeb Boathouse) like When Harry Met Sally and Enchanted
  • Take a picnic near Cherry Hill Fountain like Layla and Sonny from Big Daddy

This is a great activity for couples in New York City because it offers many romantic elements, such as ice skating, feeding ducks, and strolling while holding hands.

Central Park is HUGE, and you can spend hours exploring it. To keep it efficient, you can research the famous filming locations in advance so you know exactly where to head when you visit for your Central Park filming location photoshoot.

Spend a Perfect Couple’s Day in Chelsea

Located in Lower Manhattan, the Chelsea neighborhood offers art, history, views, and a real taste of New York.

Begin your day with a stroll through the amazing Chelsea Market, open 7 AM -10 PM, at 15th St. and 10th Ave. Grab some coffee and take your time exploring the artisanal shops before you head out to find the art galleries of Chelsea. Between 18th St. to 27th St., you’ll see some of New York’s most famous art exhibits.

Next, walk to the waterfront along the West Side Highway to the funny-looking pods that prop up the man-made Little Island. Enjoy the island’s cool perspective of the lower Manhattan skyline. Next door is the Pier 57 food court where you can buy lunch and eat on the rooftop park.

Then head back to one of the many staircases that lead to the High Line. This 1.5-mile public park on the old rail trail above the streets of Manhattan is one of the unique things you can do in New York. You’ll find access points from 14th St. to 28th St. Enjoy the gardens and historic architecture at a relaxed pace before making your way back to 14th St. for a visit to the famed Whitney Museum of American Art. This world-renowned museum has incredible exhibits, not to mention lovely outdoor sculpture gardens with views.

You can wrap up your couple’s date with drinks and dinner at one of the many chic restaurants in the charming Meatpacking District along Gansevoort Plaza across from the Whitney. What a great day!

Enjoy Citi Field at a Mets Baseball Game

Heading to a Mets game at Citi Field in Queens is a fantastic idea for couples looking for something different to do in NYC. This modern stadium brings together enthusiastic major league baseball fans from April to October each year.

The ballpark is really easy to get to, as the subway drops you off right beside the stadium. Once you’re inside, the park is buzzing with energy, and the stadium concourse is impressive with great food, drink, and souvenir options on every level.

And, no matter where you’re seated, you’re guaranteed an excellent view of the game. Just remember, it is an open-air stadium, so you are exposed to the sun, rain, and wind. Games might be postponed if it rains, but you will get a rain check to return to a game on another date.

When you visit, be sure to take some time to appreciate the Jackie Robinson Rotunda. This area is a tribute to the legendary Jackie Robinson, featuring a 9-foot sculpture of his retired number and an exhibition about his life and groundbreaking career. It’s a touching reminder of his impact on the game and beyond.

For sports lovers, Citi Field is a “must-visit” major league baseball stadium. But even if you’re not the biggest baseball fan, watching a game at Citi Field is about the experience. With awesome food options, a great stadium design, and an exhilarating atmosphere, taking in a baseball game at Citi Field is a fun way for any couple to spend time together in New York City!

Take a Graffiti Workshop Together

If you want something unique to do as a couple in NYC, head to the Bushwick Neighborhood of Brooklyn to view street art and learn how to make your own in a graffiti class.

While you can join in on a public workshop, private date night graffiti classes are available for couples or double dates.  Everything is included to make your take-home graffiti canvas art to remember the fun and unique date night.

You can book additional time and bring clothes to spray paint after your lesson as an add-on.

The date night graffiti class is usually held at 8 pm, but you may be able to change the time by calling.  Public workshops are held at 3 pm which is great if you prefer to take a class before a dinner date.  Private workshops are held throughout the day.

Even though the paint should come off, this is not the date to wear your best clothes. Wear something you do not mind getting paint on, just in case.

Street art tours are also available in Bushwick, as well as in Manhattan.  If you want another unique date, there are plenty of off-the-beaten-path tours in NYC.

West Village Wine Bar Hopping

The West Village is often regarded as one of the most romantic neighborhoods in Manhattan, and it isn’t just for its charming brownstones and eclectic designer boutiques. The neighborhood is home to a swath of cozy wine bars boasting interesting bottles from around the globe.

For locals, these bars are a go-to first-date idea, as their atmospheres are buzzy—not loud—and typically filled with other couples. If you’re in a relationship, make a night out of it by bouncing between a few of the best West Village wine bars.

Start early on weekends, around 5 or 6 p.m., as popular spots fill up quickly. First, stroll into Stafili Wine Cafe, dedicated to Greek wine, to set the mood with its big, open windows and exposed brick walls.

When you’re ready for a bite, have your second glass at Sogno Toscano Market & Wine Bar. The intimate hideout serves some of the neighborhood’s best paninis and has live music on the weekend, creating an amazing atmosphere that will transport you to Italy.

After a bite, continue downtown to L’Accolade, a simple spot specializing in unusual natural wines, before wrapping up your night at Temperance Wine Bar, a chic neighborhood bar for true vinos known for its hard-to-find bottles and wine flights.

Many bars in the West Village accept reservations in advance. Reservations are recommended during peak hours on weekends, though many bars allow walk-ins as long as you’re willing to wait. When making reservations, take walking distances into calculation— planning your route in advance helps.

Take the Cable Car to Roosevelt Island and Picnic

Roosevelt Island is a great option for something unique for couples to do in NYC. The Roosevelt Island Tram is part of the NYC subway system and offers amazing views of the NYC skyline for just the cost of a MetroCard swipe. You’ll rise 250 feet above the East River and be transported between Roosevelt Island and Manhattan in just four minutes!

Once on Roosevelt Island, stroll around the island with your significant other and enjoy the skyline view of Manhattan. Some highlights to see along the walk are the Blackwell House (one of the oldest houses in New York City),  Blackwell Island Lighthouse, and the Smallpox Hospital which is now in ruins. While the Smallpox Hospital is off limits, it’s viewable behind a fence and about 100 feral cats live there.

After your walk, head to Four Freedoms Park. This is a memorial and green area dedicated to FDR. They also often host events like kit flying, readings, and outdoor yoga classes. The views are amazing from here and it’s a great date in NYC!

Grab Drinks at Monarch Rooftop Lounge

Every couple visiting NYC will undoubtedly want to see the Empire State Building and admire some of the amazing views from a fabulous rooftop bar. At the Monarch Rooftop Lounge, you can accomplish both!

The Monarch Lounge is on the top floor of the Midtown Courtyard Marriott at Herald Square; however, the hotel does not own it. Make a reservation online; otherwise, you’ll most likely have to wait in a long line. The reservation just provides entrance to the lounge. Inside, you can find a table or stand, or you can spend your time outside. There’s lots of seating, and it’s surprisingly roomy.

The vibe indoors is nightclubesque, and animal prints and oversized chairs provide lots of instagrammable spots. It’s a fun, lively atmosphere that almost guarantees a good time and some of the best people watching in the city. Even in cooler weather, it’s worth going outside on the terrace for the romantic vistas and then coming inside for a drink or a snack.

Drinks are usually the preference. They are better known for their specialty cocktails with ingredients like cactus, pineapple, and pear liqueurs rather than for their food. But you have lots of fabulous options for eating in Manhattan. So, if you’re hungry at the Monarch, just have a light snack and save your appetite for afterward. You’re here so you can feel like you can reach out and touch the Empire State Building!

Take in the Views on the Water

Riding the ferries around NYC is a unique thing for couples to do in NYC. The ferry rides provide a great view of the skyline of Manhattan, bridges, and the Statue of Liberty from the water, all at an affordable price. Many boat tours cost a lot more.

  • NYC Ferry: The official NYC ferries have several routes that run mostly around Manhattan and to outer boroughs. Wall St. / Pier 11 is the main hub for this network. From Wall Street, you can easily get to the beautiful area of Dumbo and then ride under the Brooklyn Bridge. This would be the best route for photos! Additionally, during the summer, you can take the NYC ferry deeper into Brooklyn and to Rockaway Beach, Queens. The NYC ferries are all new catamarans, with awesome rooftop seating. The NYC ferry costs $4.00 one way.
  • Staten Island Ferry: The Staten Island Ferry is known for being a popular tourist spot on the weekend, as it sails close to the Statue of Liberty. The boat is a large vessel, not the chic ferry catamaran. Though, the Staten Island Ferry is free to ride.
  • NY Waterway: The NY Waterway ferries stop at several points throughout Manhattan and New Jersey. These ferries are fantastic for views along the Hudson River – on the West Side on Manhattan. From here, you can see the sleek Hudson Yards skyscrapers. The ferry varies in price between where you go. For example, on weekends from Brookfield Place (Financial District in Manhattan) to the Hoboken, NJ terminal, the cost is $8.

On most of the ferry boats, you can find snack stands that have beverages, snacks, and even alcohol!

Visit a Prohibition Era Speakeasy on the Lower East Side

For an intimate date night with historical vibes, head on over to one (or two!) of the speakeasies that dot the Lower East Side. Reminiscent of the Prohibition era, these concealed cocktail bars are known for their hidden entrances, elaborate decor, cozy seating, and inherently romantic ambiance.

While there are countless establishments for you to choose from, the most famous and authentic is The Back Room. Situated at the end of a hidden alleyway, this speakeasy is one of two remaining bars in the city that actually operated during the 1920’s Prohibition era. Here, drinks are covertly served in tea cups and brown paper bags, and a secret room lies in wait for VIPs and special events.

Other popular speakeasies on the Lower East Side include Attaboy, where there’s no marked entrance or menu – drinks here are made custom order for everyone. As well as, Fig 19, which is hidden within an art gallery. And Garfunkel’s, a former corrupt bank firm that’s been converted into a speakeasy. Here, you’ll find lingering remnants of the firm, including a bank vault door that acts as the entrance to this hidden establishment.

It’s important to note that most of the speakeasies on the Lower East Side are quite small and tend to fill up quickly. So, it’s best to come early or make reservations when possible. And be sure to dress to impress! Many speakeasies have dress codes that prohibit casual wear – this means no sneakers, no sportswear, and no jeans. Instead, you should plan to wear dressy or business casual attire.

Stay in a High Floor Room with a View

This must be one of the most romantic things you can do in New York City with your partner. Imagine being in bed while looking at a view you usually only see from rooftops?

Manhattan is famous for its numerous skyscraper buildings, and while it’s impressive when you look up from the ground, seeing them from above is just as incredible, if not more.

When walking through the streets of Manhattan, those buildings might feel too big, surrounding you. However, when you get up high, you feel like you’re part of them, yet in a very quiet environment, far from the noise of the city.

Midtown Manhattan is the best area to stay in New York to have such an experience. Most of the skyscraper hotels offer rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows on one or two sides of the room. This way, visitors can really soak up the energy of the skyline at sunrise or sunset.

This is an excellent couple’s anniversary gift, allowing you to enjoy each other in an intimate setting, with one of the Big Apple’s most breathtaking views.

We especially recommend Arlo NoMad, a new hotel where you can get a room with outstanding views on a very high floor. It also has a very nice rooftop bar.

Go to an NHL Hockey Game

Going to a hockey game in NYC is not only a unique idea for date night, but it’s a fantastic way to experience the city’s energy. Whether you’re rooting for the home team or just there for the fun, the excitement of an NHL game is unbeatable.

While in New York, you are even lucky enough to have two great venues to choose from: Madison Square Garden and the UBS Arena.

Madison Square Garden, where the New York Rangers play, is right in the heart of Manhattan. It’s super easy to get to—just hop on the subway to 34th Street Penn Station, which is right underneath the arena.

Just a heads up, games at Madison Square Gardens usually cost more and tend to book up quickly.

For a tasty dining option near Madison Square Garden, you might want to try Friedman’s. It’s close to the arena and is known for its great comfort food. Their menu offers a variety of hearty dishes as well as gluten-free options.

For NHL action with the New York Islanders, you’ll want to head to the UBS Arena at Belmont Park. The arena is located a bit east of the city in Elmont, New York.

The easiest way to get there without a car is to take the train. You can catch a train from Penn Station to Elmont Station, which is directly north of the arena. This makes it super convenient for game days.

For dining near UBS Arena, you should check out King Umberto. It’s not right next to the arena but it’s a local favorite just a short drive or train ride away in Elmont. This place is famous for its Italian cuisine, especially the pizza and pasta.

Dinner Cruise on the Hudson or East River

dinner cruise in New York City gives couples an opportunity to see the city from a remarkable vantage point. A combination of the city lights, the iconic skyline, and the intimate setting that makes it a truly unique experience. A dinner cruise along the Hudson or East River offers breathtaking views of landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, and the sparkling  Manhattan skyline at night.

These cruises usually last about two to three hours, providing not just dinner but also entertainment like live music to DJ sets. The atmosphere is always perfect for romantic moments.

Operating hours tend to vary, but most cruises set sail in the evening to capitalize on the sunset views and the city’s beauty at night. Boarding locations are typically convenient, found along Manhattan’s piers, which are easily accessible to the public.

Many companies offer packages for anniversaries, proposals, or Valentine’s Day, often including extras like champagne or a private table to make the evening even more memorable. Special considerations should be given to booking in advance, especially for holidays or summer weekends, as these cruises are popular and fill up quickly.

A dinner cruise in NYC combines dining, sightseeing, and entertainment, capturing the heart of what the city offers in a cozy vibe. For couples, it’s a night to remember, offering a chance to celebrate love amidst the city’s magic, making it a must-do New York experience.

Drinks at the Marriott Marquis 8th Floor Bar

The Marriott Marquis is a well-known hotel located in Times Square in the heart of Manhattan. While Times Square is not romantic with its hustle and bustle, busy streets, and loud sounds, overlooking the glittering street above Times Square? That is pretty romantic and unique!

Located on the 8th floor of the Marriott Marquis, you’ll find a bar called Broadway Lounge overlooking the heart of Times Square. This bar offers great views without all the sound and since it’s inside, you’ll get excellent views no matter what season you’re visiting New York in! Well worth stopping in at this spot when in New York with your significant other.

This is also a great place to spend New Year’s Eve in Times Square. While expensive, it’s much easier and will keep you from the crowds throughout the whole day.

Spend a Day at Coney Island

Coney Island is a peninsular neighborhood and entertainment area in the southwestern section of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Coney Island is so fun and makes the perfect day trip for couples visiting New York.

While at Coney Island, ride all the iconic and historic rides on the boardwalk in Luna Park and make sure you don’t miss having the original Nathan’s Hot Dog together while here. Hours vary based on the day of the week and season, but you can always check the Luna Park website before going to see when they are open. Luna Park is typically open 12 pm – 5 pm, but if you want to make a day of it, get there early, go to the beach, and check out the boardwalk in the afternoon!

Coney Island is such a unique place to visit when in NYC, especially for couples. Hold hands, play games, enjoy the beach together, and head back after spending a day exploring in the sun.

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is more than just a Skydeck in NYC; it is an immersive experience perfect for couples. There are three different floors, each offering a unique experience with the best views of NYC.

You will start at the 91st floor with Transcendence 1. The whole floor is in mirrors and floor to ceiling glass windows. At first, the view can be disorienting, but it’s fun to observe yourself, your partner, and everyone around you.

The 91st floor is the perfect place to take those beautiful couple photos with icons of NYC in the background. You’ll see Reflect Room, an installation by Yayoi Kusama where you can spend a few minutes meditating and the Affinity Room with the enormous floating orbs. It’s a fun room where you can play with your partner.

After you’ve explored Transcendence 1, head up to the 92nd floor, where you’ll start with Transcendence 2. It’s another mirror glass room overlooking the Transcendence Room 1 from the portal.

Now, the best part—but not for the faint of heart—is Levitation. These are two glass sky boxes suspended 1,100 feet above street level, but the only downside is that the time inside is limited. You can go together, and the staff will take your photos/videos, so be creative.

Last but not least is the 93rd floor, which has a large rooftop terrace. There, you will also find the Ascent, the world’s largest external glass lift. You need to purchase a ticket that includes Ascent; otherwise, you won’t be able to go in.

After you’ve experienced everything SUMMIT One Vanderbilt has to offer, finish
your day with your partner while drinking cocktails on the outside terrace with the views of NYC.

Stroll the Highline Together

Where can you find a calm and relaxing place in the middle of busy New York City for a romantic walk?

The High Line in Chelsea offers a unique experience for couples because you’ll still be right in the heart of the city, while enjoying the feeling of exclusivity. If you’re looking for a romantic place to hang out, the High Line is the ideal place to visit especially when the weather is warm.

Elevated above the bustling streets, this former railway line has been transformed into an urban park. You could have a picnic, or a go for a walk after eating at the popular Chelsea Market nearby. It’s the perfect blend of both industrial and urban garden aesthetic, all within this conserved railway structure.

The High Line is barely noticeable from the ground as it blends in seamlessly with the urban architecture. However, once you get up there you’ll see the gardens, art installations, and stunning views of the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline.

Located in the heart of Chelsea, the High Line stretches from Gansevoort Street to 34th Street, with multiple access points along the way. If you’re traveling to New York City on a budget, you’ll be happy to know that admission is free. The daily opening hours are from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM (closes at 8:00 PM on Sundays).

To make the most of your visit, consider taking a walk in the evening, when the golden hour glow washes the skyline in an orange hue. It gives your photos that extra magic, and a great way to remember your time on the High Line.

Eat at Smorgasburg Market

One of the coolest things to do in NYC for couples is to enjoy all the foodie vibes at Smorgasburg. The only catch is that the markets are only open during the weekend from Spring – Fall. But if you love some good bites, this is a really fun date idea. Not only that, but locals love making it out to Smorgasburg, so it’s not a tourist-focused activity in the slightest.

One of the best Smorgasburg markets is located in Williamsburg. It is important to note that this market is only open on Saturdays. The Williamsburg Smorgasburg market is one of the best because the neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is so fun, and you can see some great views of the city. After you’re done enjoying the market, you can hit up the bars, check out murals, or even eat at the famous Peter Luger Steakhouse if you haven’t had enough food to eat.

You can also enjoy the Smorgasbug Market at Prospect Park on Sunday and the One World Trade Center Market on Friday. They are all open from 11 AM – 6 PM, and as you can see, this is only a weekend activity. Additionally, they sometimes do pop-ups around other boroughs every so often.

While here, enjoy tasting dozens of cuisines at this open-air food market, with incredible views of NYC as your backdrop. In fact, it is one of the largest weekly open-air food markets in the United States of America. Many come for the lobster rolls and raw oysters, while others say the dessert is where the market shines. On a nice weekend day, it is really a no-brainer.

See a Broadway Show

One of the best things to do for couples in New York City is to see a Broadway show together. The Theater District is a top tourist attraction in NYC and one of the most romantic ones.

It’s quite nice to be able to have a night out on the town together with a lovely dinner and a Broadway show experience. You can cozy up together in one of 41 theaters to watch some of the most talented artists perform live. It will bring you closer as you create these memories together and will certainly spark conversation once the show is finished.

The hardest part is probably choosing which show to see!

Consider something romantic and tragic like Moulin Rouge or Hadestown. Alternatively, opt for one of the classics like Chicago, The Lion King, or Wicked. If you’re in the mood to experience something completely new together, try one of the latest additions like Merrily We Roll Along, which opened with big names like Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe.

It’s important to note that each show operates individually. They all have their own theater, tickets, start time, and duration.

For a nice, romantic and classic NYC nightcap, consider a drink from Sardi’s, one of the most famous nearby restaurants. If there’s a wait, ask about being seated at their bar! Or, share a cheesecake slice from Junior’s, another iconic spot in the city. If it’s packed, they have slices to go that you can enjoy together.

The Harlem neighborhood is one of the most fascinating neighborhoods in New York, it has undergone many ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic changes that have resulted in a variety of cafes, restaurants and theaters.

Guides tell many stories about the innovative Renaissance players who put American music on the world map.
