Cold Winter Honeymoon Destinations
The destinations on this part of the list may be cold, but they are full of cozy fires, snowy adventures, and even festive cities lit up for the holidays. These are some destinations that are perfect for a romantic, cozy winter honeymoon.

Alaska, USA
Alaska is truly one of those bucket list destinations that offer very different, incredible experiences in the winter versus summer. For those that love the winter, no place beats Alaska as an ultimate winter honeymoon destination.
With countless amazing places to stay in Alaska, winter activities, and even a Nordic spa, there is a little something for everyone. Imagine a winter wonderland with towering mountains, glistening glaciers, northern lights, and some of the best heli-skiing in the world.
Fly into Anchorage for the most non-stop flights and milder weather than Fairbanks. The Anchorage area is a convenient jump-off point for many of the Alaska activities. Whiskey and Ramen is a must-try for a romantic setting and a delicious meal.
No matter what you or your sweetie are into, if you love winter and want romantic honeymoon activities in a bucket list destination, there is no place like Alaska.
What makes Alaska an incredible honeymoon destination in the winter:
- Skiing and Nordic Spa at Alyeska
- Snowmobiling (day and overnight trips)
- Walking on a glacier or ice climbing for the adventurous

Antarctica
A honeymoon in Antarctica is a trip you’ll remember as fondly as your wedding day. As one of the least visited places on Earth, it’s truly a stunning destination.
You can only visit the ice continent between November and March, which is the summer season. Smaller cruise ships allow you to actually go on land and enjoy the breathtaking nature up close.
From unique rock formations, snow-covered mountains, and peaceful blue seas dotted with icebergs. Seals of all sizes relax on land while the curious penguins walk right up to you. Sail by icebergs and keep an eye out for humpback whales and orcas peeking out of the waves.
For the courageous couple, consider camping in Antarctica. You sleep outside in a tent on the ice, under the stars, with only the sound of the wind and the ocean. It feels peaceful and wild at the same time. There are no hotels, no shops—just nature and you.
This honeymoon is not about luxury. It is about adventure and sharing a once-in-a-lifetime journey. If you and your partner love nature and want to see the world’s edge together, Antarctica will give you memories you will never forget.
What makes it special:
- Pristine, untouched natural beauty
- Get up close to penguins
- Enjoy a night on the ice by camping
- See untouched nature unlike anywhere else on Earth

Banff, Canada
Looking for a winter honeymoon destination? Consider Banff, Alberta, located in the beautiful Canadian Rockies. As someone who lives nearby and visits frequently, I can attest to Banff’s charm, especially during winter.
Banff offers a perfect blend of breathtaking landscapes, cozy accommodations, and romantic activities, making it ideal for couples seeking a memorable winter getaway. Imagine the small town vibe, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and crisp mountain air.
Banff’s natural beauty and the warmth of its hospitality will allow any visitor to create cherished memories that will last forever. Banff promises an unforgettable winter honeymoon experience.
Favorite Activities in Banff:
- Scenic Winter Hikes: Explore the serene beauty of Banff National Park on snow-covered trails. My favorite winter hike in Banff is Tunnel Mountain.
- Hot Springs Retreat: Indulge in relaxation at Banff’s hot springs, offering stunning views and soothing thermal waters. Many of the hotels also have hot pools, with amazing views.
- Luxurious Accommodations: Charming lodges and boutique hotels are perfect for romantic evenings by the fireplace. I highly recommend the Fairmont Banff Hot Springs, a favorite of mine.
- Adventure Activities: Ice skating on Lake Minnewanka, skiing at Sunshine, or enjoying the many first-class restaurants found here, Banff offers activities to suit every couple’s taste.

Big Sky
Big Sky is located in Montana, just a few miles outside of Yellowstone National Park. The town is renowned for having some of the best ski slopes in the country. With winter activities such as skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and cozy cabins to curl up in by a warm fire, Big Sky is the perfect destination for couples seeking a romantic honeymoon in the mountains.
The Ousel Falls trail offers a leisurely 1.6-mile journey through a stunning snow-covered forest. This trail leads to a magnificent frozen waterfall, a breathtaking sight. If you’re a nature enthusiast, don’t miss a visit to Yellowstone National Park, where the vibrant colors of the geothermal activity contrast beautifully against the white snow in winter.
Why it’s perfect in winter:
- Beautiful snow-capped mountain views
- Romantic cabins and chalets
- Hiking and snowshoeing trails leading to frozen waterfalls
- Ranked as the #1 ski destination in the U.S.

Finland
Cities like Helsinki, Rovaniemi, and Turku are dotted with striking architecture, historical landmarks, museums, art centers, and, of course, bustling cafes and restaurants known for delish Finnish food. Experience the Finnish sauna or take a dip in a hot spring. Include Finland in your Europe itinerary, and you will have a memorable honeymoon.
Remember to book your flights and accommodation at least three months in advance, as prices may increase at the last minute.
The winter in Finland will welcome you with:
- Adventure activities: Skiing, snowmobiling, husky and reindeer sledging in Lapland.
- Northern lights: What can be more romantic than sitting under the sky with your loved one and watching the northern lights dance above, right?

- Rugged land: Go cycling around pristine islands, explore the forests gleaming under the blanket of snow, or simply enjoy quiet nature walks with your loved one.

Innsbruck, Austria
Innsbruck in the winter is a great honeymoon destination for adventurous and outdoorsy couples. Located in the Austrian Alps and Tyrol region, it offers numerous skiing and snowboarding opportunities from a convenient base city, where holiday markets twinkle through the night.
By day, you can be hitting the slopes or sledding and by night you can be strolling the cobblestone streets sipping hot mulled wine and munching on warm chocolaty treats. The dark, chilly nights are perfect for linking arms with your spouse and staying warm together. The Christmas markets sell tons of local foods and gifts, and they even have music performances. Plus, Innsbruck itself has great restaurants like FRANZS Bier + Bar + Beisl.
Saunas and hot tubs are also common either in Airbnb homestay rentals or at ski-oriented hotels. This is a great way to unwind and relax tired muscles. Plus, you could gather around a fireplace sipping hot chocolate if your accommodation has a fireplace.
The snowy and mountainous environment might even beg you to stay warm all cozied up inside with your partner, adding to the romance of a wintery honeymoon getaway.
Innsbrick is a fabulous winter honeymoon because:
- Great in the winter due to the snow sports opportunities
- Sparkling Christmas markets in the evening
- Warm, cozy days spent by the fireplace or in the sauna

Kiruna, Sweden
Kiruna, nestled in Swedish Lapland, offers a magical winter honeymoon experience filled with winter activities, including viewing the Northern Lights, Dog Sledding, and relaxing in beautiful spas.
Kiruna in Northern Sweden is one of the best locations to see the Northern Lights in the world. Book a tour through the Lights of the Vikings, which I highly recommend. While you can find them alone, the dedication, knowledge, and persistence of the Lights of the Vikings guides were incredible. In the course of one night, you’ll drive to 5 different locations chasing the Northern Lights in Kiruna and see a spectacular show over 100km from Kiruna.
One of my favorite parts of our trip was dog sledding with the Alaskan Huskies through the Swedish Lapland Forest. Book it with Husky Lapland Tours, who are excellent. You can choose to drive the sled yourselves, with one person sitting on the sled and the other person driving. You’ll take your team of 5 huskies on a guided 18km route through the beautiful forest.
Camp Ripan Hotel and Spa makes for a beautiful honeymoon. Swedish Lapland is VERY cold, so you will have a lot of downtime outside your scheduled activities. It’s amazing to have a spa and restaurant in your hotel for downtime, without needing to go outside again. The breakfast is terrific, and the Spa is fantastic for warming up during the freezing Kiruna temperatures.
Why Kiruna is perfect for a winter honeymoon:
- Northern Lights Viewing: High latitude and clear skies are ideal for aurora sightings.
- Unique Accommodations: Stay in the Camp Rijan to enjoy the Spa
- Romantic Activities: Enjoy dog sledding, snowmobiling, and serene snowshoe hikes.

Tbilisi, Georgia
Although not a heavily snow-covered city, Tbilisi, Georgia’s charming capital, perfectly blends cozy winter vibes and romance.
With its stunning mix of old-world architecture, winding streets, interesting Christmas and New Year traditions, and delicious comfort food, Tbilisi in winter easily makes it one of the underrated honeymoon destinations.
Fewer crowds, cozy cafes, warm baths, and cultural experiences provide an intimate escape in winter, offering the perfect setting for quiet strolls or a peaceful retreat.
And, if you are after a romantic snow-covered mountain getaway, the ideal place is the Stepantsminda (a.k.a Kazbegi), known for its iconic Gergeti Trinity Church perched at the top of the hill under the snow-covered Mount Kazbegi.
Why Tbilisi is perfect for a winter honeymoon:
- Historic warmth: Explore Tbilisi’s ancient history and admire various architectural gems, from centuries-old forts to Art Nouveau and Soviet, then unwind at the famous sulfur baths.
- Winter delights: Indulge in hearty Georgian cuisine, such as Khinkali (dumplings), Khachapuri (cheese-filled bread), and comfort stews, as well as winter-specific dishes.
- Romantic strolls: Take a leisurely walk through the winding streets, adorned with twinkling lights (especially during Christmas and New Year’s), and enjoy spectacular views from its iconic viewpoints.
- Cultural immersion: Plan your trip to coincide with the Georgian New Year and Christmas celebrations for a more memorable honeymoon, or enjoy visits to museums and art galleries without the crowds to gain a deeper understanding of Georgian culture.

Tromsø, Norway
Located above the Arctic Circle, this charming city transforms into a winter wonderland with snow-covered streets, softly glowing lights, and the majestic yet peaceful presence of the surrounding fjords. Days are short in winter, but the cozy “hygge” way of life in Norway invites couples to slow down and connect.
- High chances to see the Northern Lights
- Romantic spa experiences like floating saunas by the fjord
- Stunning Arctic landscapes for peaceful walks or adventurous hikes
- Cozy cafés and restaurants

Valais, Switzerland
The Canton of Valais in southwestern Switzerland has all the ingredients for an incredible winter honeymoon, as you can enjoy some of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe, embark on an active trip skiing in world-class resorts, and share romantic fondue and wines from the region.
If you prefer having a base rather than constantly moving hotels, the town of Sion is centrally located in the Canton, and it’s one of my underrated European destinations because of its beauty and all the things to do nearby.
These things make it a romantic trip with your special someone:
- A personal favorite is to visiting the town of Evolene, which was named the most beautiful Swiss town a few years ago. It’s a postcard-perfect village!
- Go on a wine tasting in Sion and try the locally produced Fendant AOC Valais.
- Hit the slopes in Verbier or Zermatt and have a cozy après-ski in a mountain cabin.
- Take the Gornergrat Bahn train from Zermatt to Gornergrat. The 30ish-minute journey offers panoramic views of the Alps, including the famous Matterhorn mountain that you may recognize from a certain pyramid-shaped Swiss chocolate.
Warm Winter Honeymoon Destinations
Now for the tropical getaways, perfect for a winter honeymoon. These romantic, warm destinations will have you feeling relaxed, recharged, and enjoying a much-needed getaway from cold weather, which can be especially welcomed in those winter months.

Algarve, Portugal
The Algarve, Portugal’s sun-kissed southern coast, is a hidden gem for winter honeymooners seeking romance and sunshine. Between golden beaches and dramatic cliffs, the Algarve enjoys a mild climate, with daytime temperatures even in the coldest months hovering around 64°F.
You can expect bright, sunny days and chilly but cozy evenings. Unlike the hectic summer season, winter offers a peaceful retreat, making it perfect for couples looking to escape and explore the region at a slower pace.
Historic towns like Lagos and Tavira are perfect for exploring, with cobbled streets, lively markets, and quiet seaside cafés. The Atlantic coast and beaches are practically empty, and it is easy to feel like you have the entire coastline to yourself.
Beyond the shore, the Algarve’s rolling vineyards, spa resorts, and fine dining provide countless ways to celebrate on your honeymoon. Bali, Indonesia
Bali is a fantastic destination for couples throughout the year. It’s a gorgeous island that’s incredibly diverse, whether you’re a couple seeking luxury, adventure, or cultural immersion.
Bali is located in Indonesia, nestled between the islands of Java and Lombok, and it’s famous for its lush jungles, dramatic volcanoes, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
For beach lovers, we recommend staying in Uluwatu, which boasts some of the most spectacular stretches of sand, dramatic clifftop views, and turquoise shores. You’ll be spoiled with luxury resort options like Anantara Uluwatu, ensuring a memorable and pampered stay. Uluwatu is also home to stylish beach clubs and one of Bali’s most iconic temples, Uluwatu Temple, famous for its cliffside setting and nightly fire dance performances.
Another super romantic place to visit is Ubud, Bali’s cultural heart. Couples can indulge in luxurious spa treatments, soak in flower baths overlooking the jungle, or chase waterfalls like Tegenungan and Tibumana. For adventurous honeymooners, there are volcano hikes up Mount Batur at sunrise and scenic walks through the lush rice terraces of Tegallalang.

Cape Town, South Africa
One of the most stunning places to visit in winter (Northern Hemisphere winter that is!) for a honeymoon is Cape Town. You get the best of all types of destinations with outdoor adventures, breathtaking coastal views, and a city bustling with history, culture, and fantastic food.
December to February is summer in South Africa, with warmer temperatures and fewer visitors; it’s an ideal time for a honeymoon. Make sure to fit in a few days exploring the coastal neighborhoods like Camps Bay and the surrounding towns in False Bay. A day in the Cape Winelands or even an overnight makes for a perfect romantic activity.
Last but not least, a safari is a bucket-list experience perfect for you and your new spouse to enjoy together. You can book a day trip from Cape Town or take more time to head up to Kruger National Park. Either way, it’s a must when in South Africa!
Why Cape Town is perfect for a honeymoon:
- Visit during South Africa’s summer (December–February) for warm weather and fewer tourists, making it an ideal time to explore romantic areas and day trips.

- Include a safari experience—an unforgettable adventure for newlyweds.

Chiang Mai, Thailand
If you’re dreaming of a romantic winter honeymoon that’s a little off the beaten path, Chiang Mai, Thailand is an amazing choice. I visited last January (the height of the cool season) and fell in love with the elephants, misty mornings, and golden temples.
For a truly special stay, book a few nights at Chai Lai Orchid, a beautiful eco-lodge tucked into the jungle where elephants roam freely. Waking up with coffee on our private balcony while watching them splash in the river was absolutely unforgettable.
Chiang Mai offers the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation for couples seeking a perfect adventure in Asia. You can take a fun and affordable Thai cooking class, wander ancient temples hand-in-hand, and, if your timing is right, experience Loy Krathong, releasing lanterns into the night sky for good luck and new beginnings.
The cool, dry season makes winter the best time to visit, with a cozy, festive vibe perfect for a honeymoon.
Highlights of Chiang Mai in winter:
● Stay at Chai Lai Orchid and experience eco-luxury with elephants
● Take a couples’ Thai cooking class for a fun and delicious date
● Wander ancient temples like Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang
● Celebrate Loy Krathong with floating lanterns and candle-lit rivers

Fulidhoo, Maldives
In the remoteness of the Indian Ocean, the islands of the Maldives need no introduction, especially as a honeymoon destination. However, choosing which of the hundreds of islands to visit during this special trip can be daunting, but one perfect for a winter honeymoon is Fulidhoo.
This tiny island (750m x 250m), featuring pure white sand and palm trees, epitomizes the secluded tropical island atmosphere. Here, you can fully disconnect from the world together in a boutique beachfront guesthouse.
Fulidhoo is also a local island (rather than a resort island), which means you’ll not only enjoy a paradise destination but also get an authentic insight into the slow-paced Maldivian way of life.
While the Maldives is considered a year-round destination, the winter months are a great time to visit. This is because the weather is at its best, with minimal rain and storms, and the seas are calmer, making for ideal boat trips and snorkeling conditions. Enjoy your winter honeymoon in a Maldivian paradise!
Other highlights of a trip to Fulidhoo Island include:
- Spotting sting rays swimming around the pier daily.
- Fantastic snorkel trips to discover the incredible colours and animals of the underwater world.
- Romantic candlelit dinners on the beach.

Marrakech, Morroco
Marrakech, Morocco, is an excellent winter honeymoon destination for couples seeking a blend of good weather, rich culture, and delicious cuisine. The city stays mild from November to February, with sunny days and cooler evenings – ideal for exploring the medina, relaxing in a riad, or enjoying dinner on a rooftop. Fewer crowds in winter also mean more space to take it all in.
What makes Marrakech feel romantic is the variety of experiences that can be shared as a couple. A sunrise hot air balloon ride was our highlight, with views of the Atlas Mountains and surrounding villages. Many riads offer private hammam treatments, a great way to unwind after a day in the souks. A short drive takes you to the Agafay desert, where it’s possible to swim, eat by a fire, and watch the sunset before a camel ride back to camp.
Why it’s great in winter:
- Warm, dry days with cooler nights – easy to dress for and pleasant to explore
- Outside of peak season, so less bus,y and prices are lower
- Romantic touches like rooftop meals, hammams, and desert sunsets

Patagonia, Argentina and Chile
If you’re dreaming of a winter honeymoon on the edge of the world, the Patagonia region is hard to beat. With its breathtaking landscapes, remote lodges, and endless adventures, it’s the perfect destination for couples craving something extraordinary.
While it’s technically summer in the Southern Hemisphere during the Northern winter, this is the ideal time to explore Patagonia’s wild terrain. The region’s fresh mountain air, dramatic scenery, and sense of total escape made it feel like the ultimate romantic adventure.
From bucket list hikes and glacier treks to peaceful stargazing in the mountains, you’re guaranteed an unforgettable experience. Base yourself in Argentina’s trekking capital, El Chaltén, or visit Chile’s famous Torres del Paine National Park to tackle some of the world’s most iconic trails.
If you’re looking to unwind, book a stay at one of Patagonia’s luxury lodges, eco-camps, or boutique hotels and spas, many offering sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Phoenix, Arizona
Phoenix, Arizona, is an excellent choice for a winter honeymoon destination within the United States.
Winter weather in Phoenix is perfect for sharing outdoor activities with your sweetie. Enjoy a round of golf at an amazing golf course, see the beauty of the desert with a visit to the Desert Botanical Garden, or go for a hike on Camelback Mountain. For the ultimate in romance, take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise for breathtaking views.

Phoenix winter highlights:

Seychelles
The Seychelles are a tropical heaven located in the Indian Ocean, near the eastern coast of Africa. The Seychelles archipelago consists of 115 islands that attract travelers with their pristine beaches, lush tropical vegetation, and vibrant culture.
The beaches are truly remarkable, the turquoise waters, white sand, and the unique huge granite boulders set the perfect scenery for couples, making this destination a paradise for honeymooners.
The weather in the Seychelles is generally pleasant, with warm temperatures year-round. However, from December to March, the Northwest Monsoon brings rain and light winds. January and December are considered the rainiest months. Although the rains are usually brief, consider making your winter getaway in November or February, which are significantly drier months.
Seychelles are reached by flight to the main island of Mahe. Island hopping in the Seychelles is the best way to explore this beautiful destination, and it is easily done using local ferries that connect the neighboring islands. The Seychelles offer more than just stunning beaches, especially for nature enthusiasts.
Visitors can encounter the Aldabra Giant Tortoises, see the iconic Coco de Mer, the symbol of the Seychelles, at the UNESCO World Heritage site Valleé de Mai, hike through lush rainforest vegetation to picturesque viewpoints, explore the abundant underwater marine life, and much more.
Seychelles is perfect for a honeymoon in winter:
- The winter months in the Seychelles provide warm temperatures, ranging from 26°C to 31°C (79°F to 88°F), making it an ideal time for a winter beach escape.
- While the rainy season occurs during the winter months, the showers are usually brief and actually contribute to the lush greenery that adds to the natural beauty of this tropical destination.
- Winter time falls outside the peak tourist season, leading to fewer crowds, a more tranquil experience, and more affordable accommodation options.

Siem Reap, Cambodia
Siem Reap, Cambodia, may just be the most amazing spot for a winter honeymoon. It ticked all the boxes we were looking for: a romantic hotel, amazing food, great weather, and a unique atmosphere.
The Phum Baitang Hotel is the benchmark for any luxury stay. It has 45 individual villas with thatched roofs set amidst acres of rice paddy fields. Wood-planked pathways lead you between the common areas of the resort, where the only sound is that of the animals living in the patties.
The service level is 5-star, and they offer a congratulatory honeymoon dinner in their restaurant. I still dream about the breakfast buffet in an open-air thatched hut, with a fresh juice bar and warm pastries. It inspired us to buy a juicer.
Set in an old farmhouse on stilts, filled with rattan chairs covered in comfy pillows, is a magical lounge serving up great cocktails. It has a view over the property where you can watch the sunset over the infinity pool.
In the mornings, the hotel arranged for private guides and tuk-tuks to transport us 25 minutes to the gates of the UNESCO-listed Angkor Wat ruins. Trees and plants grow out of the temples, it feels like walking through an enchanted forest.
As Western currencies are strong, it was a good deal for the high-quality level of the private tours. You can do ruins trips multiple mornings and then return to the hotel to lounge by the pool in the afternoons.
What makes Siem Reap special for your honeymoon in winter:
- Temperature: January sees daily highs of 85 to 88 degrees, and February is about 3 degrees warmer.
- Romance factor: High. Private villas with lounge areas, some with private pools.
- Food: Tasty Cambodian dishes mixed with international favorites – both in the hotel and town of Siem Reap.
- Atmosphere: Amazing, it’s tough to top UNESCO-listed Angkor Wat.

Zanzibar, Tanzania
Zanzibar in the winter is amazing – it was truly the perfect mixture of peace, relaxation, and beauty. The Zanzibar Archipelago is known for having some of Tanzania’s most incredible beaches.
The weather in Zanzibar during the winter is sunny with gorgeous blue skies and vibrant colors of the turquoise ocean, vibrant green plants, and colorful flowers. Spend your days uncovering the famous Stone Town, walking along its soft, white sandy beaches, exploring the spice farms, and enjoying paddleboarding while watching its mesmerizing golden sunsets.
What is great about traveling during the wintertime is that the island has fewer tourists, which allows you more freedom to enjoy the ocean and beaches – on some occasions, it felt like I had the whole island to myself. I stayed in a beautiful beachfront spa lodge that was perfect for couples seeking relaxation, togetherness, and beauty all rolled into one.
Candlelit dinners and calming plunge pools surrounded the beach huts – the ambiance felt magical. Whether you snorkel in the ocean, bask in the sunshine, wander around Stone Town, or take a trip to a nearby island, there is romance everywhere. Zanzibar is a wonderful island to spend a honeymoon in winter.
Why Zanzibar is ideal for a winter honeymoon:
- Perfect weather: The climate from December to February is dry, sunny, and warm.
- Couples paradise: Beautiful lodges, tranquil beaches and serene sunsets perfect for an intimate honeymoon.
- A unique blend of cultures: There is an interesting mixture of Arab, Swahili, and European influences to uncover.
- Water sports: Snorkeling, paddle boarding, diving, swimming and sailing in Zanzibar’s warm and calm waters.
Tips for a Honeymoon in Winter
Now that you’ve got your destination inspiration, let’s ensure you’re equipped with a few tips to really get the planning started! Below are some tips to help you plan out the perfect trip.
- Consider a travel package. Most of the time, I recommend booking things individually and traveling independently. But, when it comes to a honeymoon, it’s better to be focused on having fun with your new spouse.
- Watch out for peak travel crowds in certain destinations, research ahead of time the peak time of year for travel if you’re trying to do something more relaxing, you may want to choose an off-peark destitation.
- Book early. Winter = busy season for both ski towns and tropical getaways.
- Speaking of relaxing, prioritize it! Plan a few excursions (like snorkeling or a sunset cruise), but leave lots of lazy time, too, to enjoy spending time with your new spouse. Have enough activities to feel special but not so packed that you’re exhausted. Think: 1 “big” thing per day max.
- You can splurge a little (or a lot); it’s all about deciding what you want to spend your money on!
- Always make sure you have travel insurance (especially if you plan on doing winter sports like skiing).
- Consider renting clothes to look extra cute on your trip. I always use Rent the Runway for this!
