While Halloween is officially on October 31st, most of the towns on this list (and around the US) will have celebrations going on for weeks or even the entire month of October and beyond! I love Halloween and have had the opportunity to do a lot of fall travel over the years. So, without further hesitation, below are Halloween towns you don’t want to miss.

2. Sleepy Hollow, NY
Made famous in 1820 by Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” this town has a legend that lives on. They embrace the eerie folklore with a variety of haunted events for Halloween.
The story revolves around schoolteacher Ichabod Crane, who is competing for the love of Katrina Van Tassel. After a party one night, Crane heads home only to be followed by a mysterious clock rider holding a pumpkin without a head.
The chase leads to a bridge, which, according to legend, the Horseman cannot cross. However, just before Ichabod reaches safety, the Horseman throws the pumpkin at him, and Ichabod is never seen in Sleepy Hollow again.

Kicking off Halloween festivities on September 13th, the town comes (un)alive with spooky holiday decor in nearly every storefront window. The town’s Skeleton Adoption Agency opens its doors to ensure that every property in town is oozing with Halloween spirit.
The transition to October kicks off with the Witches’ Day Out block party, where Cynthiana transforms into a place for ghouls and goblins to traipse through the streets. Live music, vendors, and seasonal food close down the streets to celebrate the transition into the year’s spookiest month.
For both skeptics and believers of all ages, the historic Rohs Opera House hosts ghost tours every Friday and Saturday throughout October. The tours visit sites that add small-town charm by day but grow spookier as the lights dim.
Self-guided Walking Dead tours are available for zombie lovers seeking a pilgrimage to the comic book series’ original setting. The tours include a stop at the large-scale mural featuring Rick Grimes and other protagonists from the comic’s corresponding television series.

One of the reasons Charleston, SC, stands out as a Halloween destination is its reputation as one of the most haunted cities in America. The city’s rich history provides an authentic backdrop for all your spooky adventures. The historic architecture with cobblestone streets and centuries-old buildings adds an eerie atmosphere perfect for Halloween explorations.
Charleston offers a variety of Halloween attractions that cater to all levels of bravery. Boone Hall Fright Nights is a must-visit located on a historic plantation. This event features multiple haunted attractions, including the “Wicked Woods Haunted Hayride” and the “Boone Hall Plantation House of Horrors.” The combination of history and horror makes this a truly unique experience.

“Spirit of Halloweentown” festival, themed events, parades, and lots of performances. Visits from the cast of Halloweentown are often some of the performers and entertainment during October. Tickets are available for events and are well worth the visit!
7. Estes Park, CO
Home to the Stanley Hotel, which inspired Stephen King’s The Shining, Estes Park is an excellent destination for horror fans. The Stanley Hotel hosts several events around Halloween that make Estes Park feel incredibly spooky.
Haunted hotel tours, murder mystery dinners, movie showings, and a spooky Halloween ball at the Stanley Hotel. Of course, staying here would make it extra spooky, but make sure you plan far in advance as hotel availability goes quickly during October!
There are also other cool things to do in Estes Park, CO, around Halloween, like a pumpkin beer fest, live music, and excellent fall pumpkin patches.
8. Eureka Springs, AR
From hordes of trick-or-treaters to hordes of zombies, Eureka Springs does Halloween like no other town!
Eureka Springs has a very haunted history, and two of the most haunted hotels in the US—The Crescent Hotel and Spa and The Basin Park Hotel—are perfect for your stay.
However, during Halloween, they host many events, such as the annual Witches Escape, the Witches + Wizards Ball, a Zombie Crawl, and special tours through cemeteries, spooky spots in town, and more.
I’ve been on a lot of ghost tours for the cities on this list, and the ghost tour at the Crescent Hotel is the scariest one I’ve been on! When you go into that basement and look at the specimens from patients that went missing in the 1800s they found when digging around the hotel during a renovation… there’s nothing more spooky than that!
9. Salem, MA
Located in New England, just 40 minutes from Boston, Massachusetts, is one of the most popular destinations for Halloween in the US. Salem is famous for its 17th-century witch trials, and it capitalizes on its spooky history by offering haunted tours, reenactments, and Halloween events throughout October.
Salem gets extremely crowded in the fall, so you’ll need to be careful about parking and expect long lines and crowds when visiting. Make reservations in advance for activities that you can. Some highlights include the Salem Witch Museum, haunted houses, ghost tours, and the month-long “Haunted Happenings” festival.
Throughout Salem, you’ll also find plenty of stores that are tailored to the witchy and haunted history. While most of these spots are for tourists, you will find some real stores for the occult ones in between.
This is a great stop to combine with a Vermont trip in the fall or a coastal road trip from Boston to Portland. You can also book a day trip from Boston to Salem.
10. Laconia, NH
One of the most unique places I’ve been to celebrate Halloween in America is Laconia, NH. The annual New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival is held here and attracts thousands with its massive pumpkin tower and festive Halloween activities.
I’ve never seen so many pumpkins in my life! You’ll find fantastic pumpkin displays, haunted walks, and a spooky scavenger hunt here.
The Pumpkin Festival happens the weekend before Halloween, and you can continue to see the pumpkins for a few days after. Nearby are several great farms, craft breweries, and haunted houses to visit. This is another spot that makes a great stop on a fall New England road trip!
11. New Orleans, LA
With its history steeped in Voodoo, ghost stories, and haunted locales, New Orleans is one of the best cities for celebrating Halloween. It blends spooky fun with the vibrant culture of the city, making it the perfect Halloween destination in the US!
No matter what time of year you visit, New Orleans will give you some spooky vibes, but there are plenty of activities around Halloween that make it a great destination.
Take a cemetery tour, explore Voodoo history at the Voodoo Museum, explore neighborhoods where famous mystery and thriller writers lived, and visit haunted houses like the Mortuary and New Orleans Nightmare.

You may not initially think of Orlando as one of the best Halloween towns in America, but I think it deserves to be on this list because the theme parks go all out with their decor and spooky events!
Disney hosts Mickey’s Halloween Party, the only time of year that adults are allowed to dress up inside the park! These events are family-friendly and sell out well in advance, so plan ahead and have some fun.
For those who are looking for something more spooky, Universal Studios hosts Halloween Horror Nights. Face 10 terrifying haunted houses, 5 sinister scare zones, outrageous live entertainment, and some of Universal Studios’ most exhilarating attractions.
Legoland, SeaWorld, Crayola, and more also host Halloween events. Outside of theme parks, you’ll still find lots of Halloween-themed events, such as Pirates Dinner Adventure’s Vampirates, Happy Frights at Harry P. Leu Gardens, and more!
14. Anoka, MN
Known as the “Halloween Capital of the World,” Anoka was one of the first cities in the U.S. to host Halloween festivities to discourage pranks.
While this small town near Minneapolis received the title by accident, today, it is a fun Halloween destination in the US! Back in 1920, city officials decided they’d had enough pranks on Halloween night and started a parade for kids to enjoy. It was a success—an estimated 1,000 local kids participated that first year.
This is definitely a family friendly Halloween destination with a fun Halloween past rather than spooky haunted history!

Absolutely fabulous! As an Australian, I haven’t celebrated Halloween. I would love to be in the USA at Halloween time. I’m a fan of Steven King, but I don’t think I could do Estes Park! I love the thought of visiting Salem or Sleepy Hollow. I was just saying to Hubby two days ago that I’d like to visit New Orleans, so perhaps that would be my top pick for the towns above.
So many great options to choose from! Most of Estes Park isn’t too creepy and would pair perfectly with a Rocky Mountains trip. New Orleans is such a great city on it’s own to visit though as well!

Love how Halloween is celebrated in the US. Another great Halloween town is Key West. They have fun festivities the whole of October. We loved the Zombie bike ride.
