San Diego is such a cool city with a laid-back vibe and friendly, outdoorsy culture that you need a fun place to stay when visiting! I’ve gotten the chance to visit San Diego a few times now and have experienced some of the cool hotels there. I’m excited to share them with you!
This list of cool hotels in San Diego starts with the most luxurious and expensive hotels and goes on to budget-friendly places. I’ll share details about each and why I think they are fantastic places to stay. Ultimately, choose a spot that fits your needs and vibe for a fun trip!

Tips for Choosing Where to Stay in San Diego
1. Consider the time of year
San Diego may seem warm year round, but in winter months, it’s not really warm enough to sit by the pool. It’s typically in the 50s and 60s. So, while you may want to choose a place to stay for the pool, if you’re visiting in winter, you may want to consider a hotel that offers more appealing amenities, like a view or proximity to downtown.
2. Consider Your Interests and Activities:
Along those same lines, consider the types of activities you’ll do on your trip. Depending on what you want to do, you may want to choose a different place to stay. I’ll give the neighborhood for each place on this list to help. Here’s a little about each activity and where to consider staying.
- Beach Lovers: Stay in areas like Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, or La Jolla for easy access to the coast.
- Tourist Attractions: Downtown San Diego and Gaslamp Quarter are close to major attractions like the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and the USS Midway Museum.
- Nightlife and Dining: The Gaslamp Quarter and Little Italy are known for their vibrant nightlife and excellent restaurants.
- Family-Friendly: Mission Bay offers convenient access to family attractions and is generally more affordable.
- Day trips: If you’re taking many day trips from San Diego, consider staying somewhere outside the city, like Carlsbad, to avoid traffic.
3. Transportation and Accessibility:
If you prefer public transportation, stay near trolley lines or bus routes. Downtown is well-connected, while La Jolla is more tricky.
Along those same lines, if you plan to rent a car, check the parking availability and costs. Some areas, like Downtown and La Jolla, can have expensive or limited parking.
4. Local Vibe:
Each area of San Diego has its own version of cool. Depending on what type of cool place you’re looking for, you want to stay in a neighborhood that matches! Below is a little about each area.
- La Jolla: Upscale, scenic, great for shopping, dining, and coastal views. More quaint feeling.
- Point Loma: Quiet, great for surfing, coastal views, relaxed.
- Gaslamp Quarter: Bustling, energetic, ideal for nightlife and dining. More touristy.
- Pacific Beach/Mission Beach: Young, vibrant, surf culture, ideal for beachgoers.
- North Park/South Park: Hip, artsy neighborhoods with trendy shops, cafes, and breweries. More local feel.

Location: Downtown Waterfront

La Valencia Hotel
Location: La Jolla
About: This list would be incomplete without mentioning the fabulous and iconic pink hotel right on the beach!
