Fun Things to Do in Davis, WV

Davis, WV is a town in Tucker County, West Virginia, United States, situated along the Blackwater River. The population was 660 at the 2010 census. It’s got an eclectic vibe to it with nearby attractions like ski resorts, hiking, and distilleries.

I love a mountain getaway, especially in the winter! For New Years in 2020, friends and I headed to West Virginia for a relaxing getaway in the mountains. It’s seriously a great small town for a relaxing vacation!

We spent four days exploring some of the fun things to do in Davis, WV. I was glad we chose to stay longer and got time just to take things slow. Davis is an eclectic and interesting little place. The whole area is full of charming towns that offer something different.

They always take me back to when I was growing up in Oklahoma, and I’m grateful for the chance to explore another cool town just 3 hours from Washington, DC.

Where to Stay

We chose to stay at the cutest and affordable Airbnb located right in downtown Davis. We could walk to shops and restaurants, a full kitchen, wifi, easy parking, a fire pit, and river access too. It was so affordable and the perfect spot just 15 minutes from everything we ended up doing. I highly recommend staying here!

If you’re staying with a group, there are options too! We loved visiting this cabin in the fall located right next to the ski resort. The kitchen was perfect for cooking for the group and the hot tub was where we spent the evenings relaxing.

Ski, Snowboard, or Tube at Canaan Valley Resort

We spent a day skiing and snowboarding at Canaan Valley, and it was so much fun! The resort costs $55 a person to ski ($80 on holidays), and you can rent on-site or visit the ski shop in Driftland Ski Shop in Davis for cheaper rates. They had some stunning runs and great views of the entire valley from the top. There’s a food court, bar, firepit, and lounge area for relaxing as well.

I have been spoiled with skiing in Colorado all growing up, and it’s hard to find good resorts here on the East Coast. We went on a day where it was snowing, and they were blowing the snow machines. If you’re used to powdery skiing, I recommend going on a day like this.

Hike in Blackwater Falls State Park

Blackwater Falls State Park is located in Davis, WV, and known for Blackwater Falls! The hike to the falls is really easy and beautiful. We were surprised how green it was, even in the winter. The walk took us just 2o minutes to finish.

We also went hiking at Lindy Point, which gave a beautiful view of the entire valley. We climbed around a bit on the rocks and enjoyed the views. The hike only took about 30 minutes, including a stop at the overlook.

There are plenty of trails in the park that are longer, and you could spend an entire day hike to some great views.

Go Sledding in Blackwater Falls State Park

There is a sledding area inside Blackwater Falls State Park maintained through the ski season. The hill is over a quarter-mile long, and you ride what is called a “magic carpet,” the longest people mover on the east coast that looks like a big luggage ramp but for people and sleds!

To get here, follow signs for Lindy Point, and you’ll reach the lodge where the hill is shortly before Lindy Point.

Explore the Antiques of Nearby Thomas, WV

I loved Thomas, WV. It’s located less than a 5-minute drive away from Davis with a historic downtown perfect for those who love antiques, local goods, and local art. We spent an afternoon walking around town, checking out different shops, and enjoying some great local coffee at Tip Top. I highly recommend spending some time in this town!

Enjoy Live Music at the Purple Fiddle

The Purple Fiddle hosts local musicians every Friday and Saturday with a family-friendly atmosphere. It’s always crowded, even when music isn’t playing on weekends, and you’ll find everything from acoustic to bluegrass to country blues here. They sell local food as well as beers that you can enjoy as you relax and listen to live music.

Drink Local

There always seems to be a local beverage to enjoy, no matter how big or small a town is! In downtown Davis, walkable from our Airbnb, was an excellent brewery called Stumptown Ales. Their Mango Smootheez Ale was my absolute favorite; I could drink it for days!

Nearby you’ll also find Stillwell Distillery specializing in whiskey and Mountain State Brewery, both with fewer hours than Stumptown, so double-check on their social media before visiting.

Shop Local in Davis

Davis has some great shops where you can support local artists, find cute clothes, and eat specialty meats and cheeses. I loved walking through the different shops and seeing what various artists were creating. Plus, boutiques always offer the cutest clothes that you can’t find anywhere else. There’s no downside here!
