One day at Harry Potter World at Universal Studios is just the right amount of time for us Harry Potter fans who want to experience the park and its magic. I’ve been lucky enough now to have made it to Orlando three times to visit the theme parks there. On my last trip to Florida, I got the chance to spend a day exploring Universal Studios Orlando!
Honestly, more than a day is too much for me, but I love my theme parks in small doses, at least—see my Disney post and King’s Dominion post. In recent years, other parks have started to open worlds that feel similar to HPW (Star Wars: Galaxy Edge at Disney). However, it still feels so special to visit. Let’s talk about the wa to make the most of your day in Harry Potter World!
About Harry Potter World
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (as many of us call it Harry Potter World) is an immersive theme park experience located within Universal Orlando Resort, specifically Universal Studios and Universal’s Islands of Adventure. You’ll need a two park, single day ticket to explore all of Harry Potter World in a day.
I grew up with Harry Potter! I read all the books, and the characters in the movies are basically the same age as me, so I really related to them growing up. The park is great for those who grew up on the books and movies as well as kids and families who are fans now. They do a great job of making it appeal to everyone!
There is enough to spend a full day in Harry Potter World if you are into eating there, finding all the magical spots, and going to the shows. If you want to hear more about Universal, check out this post.
I do need to say that we had planned on just visiting Harry Potter World while we were there but ended up having time in other parts of the park, too. So you can do more with a day at Universal than Harry Potter World, for now! They are opening a new park in 2025 that will include the Ministry of Magic, so that soon may change.
Tips for Visiting Harry Potter World
Before exploring for the day, here are some tips for visiting Harry Potter World to make the most of your day.
- While parking is easy and costs $30 for the day, I’d recommend staying near the park and walking instead. It will save you time! As you enter, you go through the City Walk, through security, and then to the ticket lines. There is a lot of waiting involved in all of these separate lines unless, you follow tip two. DoubleTree by Hilton at the Entrance of Universal is where I stayed on a recent trip and loved it!
- Get there early before the park opens. Most days, that is a little before 9 am, but check the Universal Orlando Resort website for the specific day of your visit. The park is far more busy later in the day, and you want to get in line for your top rides early. Gringotts, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey tend to be the most popular.
- Download the Universal App. It’s easy to check wait times, order food ahead, and check out the park map. You can also put your ticket and your credit card info directly into the app and pay for everything through it!
- To get into Universal, you’ll walk through the Universal City Walk. You do not need a ticket to walk through here and you’ll find a lot of restaurants and shops in this area. The City Walk is a great spot to eat outside the park; you can leave anytime and come back in without an issue. More on this later!
- Harry Potter World is located inside both Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Orlando. If you want to see all of Harry Potter World, you have to buy a park-to-park ticket (annoying I know), but that is the only way to see it all. You can take the Hogwarts Express between the two parks, which is a ride all by itself with exciting features as you transition from one park to another.
- Save time on lines by getting a Fast Pass or heading to the single rider line. Fast Passes are expensive, but one work around to get them is by staying at the Lowes Portofino Bay, Loews Royal Pacific Resort, or Hard Rock Hotel. You’ll pay more for the room, but get free fast passes and be able to walk into the park when staying here.
- Bring a belt bag. You can wear a belt bag on practically every ride in Universal (all of them in Harry Potter World). If you bring a backpack or bag that can’t strap around your waist, you’ll have to store it in one of the lockers. They are free, but still important to note and can save you time!
- Speaking of it being hot, no matter what time of year, bring sun protection! Sunscreen, a hat, and planned time out of the sun will help.
- Explore beyond theme parks with day trips from Orlando to some of the natural hot springs or nearby cities and beaches.
How Long to Spend at Harry Potter World
You can definitely see all of Harry Potter World in a day. We had no difficulties riding everything in the park in pretty much 6 hours. We then had extra time to walk around other parts of Universal and explore what it had to offer. I recommend getting an early start because Harry Potter World is a popular spot in Universal, and the lines can get really long.
Spending a day at Harry Potter World should be on everyone’s Orlando itinerary!
Storing Your Things
One great feature about Universal is they have lockers where you can keep your things for free up to two hours while you are on a ride. You simply use your fingerprint to lock it, and they give you a locker number to remember.

Getting into Harry Potter World inside Universal
Start in Universal Studios and head to the back of the park to check out Diagon Alley. This is the first side of the park, and it definitely feels more crowded and more magical to me than Hogsmeade.
This plus the sneaky entrance, hidden in downtown London through the bricks, makes it the right move for starting your day. On my latest trip, we got there right as it opened and were able to walk onto Gringotts, which, on previous trips, I had waited over an hour for!
If you want to enter through Hogsmeade, you can go into Universal Studios Island of Adventure first instead. You walk through to the back of the park and are in Hogsmeade. This side of the park did not feel as magical to us because there were no secret entrances, and you could see it from other portions of the park.
Plus, the buildings are lined with fake snow, but we know how hot Florida typically is! It did, however, have its own charm and is not to be missed. I just suggest starting on the other side to feel the “magic” of Harry Potter from the beginning.
Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade: The Two Sides of Harry Potter World
Both sides of the park are unique. Diagon Alley is at Universal Studios Florida and Hogsmeade is at Universal Islands of Adventure, with the Hogwarts Express to connect the two.
I loved Diagon Alley for its magical feel, but Hogsmeade had better rides. Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade have the same shops. So if you miss candy or butterbeer on one side of the park, you can still get it on the other.
To get from one side of the park to the other, you need to take the Hogwarts Express and have a park-to-park ticket. They check tickets before you enter the train. It is a ride as well as transportation with an interactive show as you travel from one park to the other.
Diagon Alley
There is only one thrill ride in Diagon Alley: Escape from Gringotts, and it is tons of fun! The big draw of Diagon Alley for me was that it was full of magic. It really feels like you are in the Harry Potter universe. The shops have food and candy from the movies and books as well as recognizable places. Knockturn Alley is even there!
Every turn brought you to another magical spot. A squeaky door that made something move, a magical animal in a shop, and all the staff refers to you as muggles. The pub is located here as well, The Leaky Cauldron, of course, and I definitely recommend this as a stop if you want to try some exclusive beers.
Hogsmeade
The other side of Harry Potter World is Hogsmeade. This side of the park has more rides and the Hogwarts Castle, which is really cool. The entire Hogwarts Castle is an indoor roller coaster ride called Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. The line through the castle is like an attraction all on its own! We had fun waiting in line, watching the interactive pictures and newspapers, and watching the snow fall from the ceiling of the dining hall.
Another ride in Hogsmeade is Flight of the Hippogryph, a small outdoor rollercoaster that is fun and fairly short.
The highlight, though, is Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. This ride was so much fun and a really unique roller coaster because you’ll have one person on a motorbike (like Hagrid) and the other in the side car (like Harry). This is one of the most iconic scenes from the movies and you get to live it! We got to be in the front row, and it was so fun.
Hogsmeade is also where you find the wand shop with the magical show. Many of the shops here are the same as Diagon Alley. But make sure you stop in a few to experience all the magic!
Things to do in Harry Potter World (besides the rides)
Get a Wand
Both sides of the park have “magical spots,” where you can use an interactive wand they sell to make things happen. Things like water spitting from a faucet or an animal moving in the window of a shop. This is a really cool and unique feature that makes getting an interactive wand really tempting.
I debated this one really hard. Should I get a wand? I looked at prices, and interactive wands ranged from $50 – $60 apiece. Regular wands were $30 – $45 apiece. This price seemed like way too much, and for this reason, I decided against getting one. We were still able to see lots of the magic happening as others had interactive wands. The magical spots were not hard to find because people were lined up waiting for turns in most spots.
If you do decide to get a wand, go to Olivander’s on the Hogsmeade side and go into the line at the side of the wand shop. There are wand shops on both sides of the park, but the Olivander’s in Hogsmeade has some special features. There is a little show that goes along with finding your wand, and the “owner” of the shop picks a member of the audience to pick their wand. It was a fun thing to experience and happens much like the books and movies.
Eat Something Good!
All of the food in Harry Potter World is inspired by English food. This felt too heavy for us to try to eat in a theme park during the day, but sounded interesting!
In Diagon Alley, you will find the Leaky Cauldron, which has both a bar and a restaurant. The Leaky Caldron also serves breakfast if you want to have breakfast in the park! You will find things like fish and chips, bangers and mash, fisherman’s pie, and more. These traditional English foods are delicious (as I’ve heard from friends), but we did not eat here.
Hogsmeade also has Three Broomsticks, which serves many of the same dishes and is only open for lunch and dinner. Hogshead is the bar located in Hogsmeade serving the same specialty beers and drinks.
Watch a Performance
Throughout both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, there are performances on different stages that you can enjoy! Below are the main shows in the parks and where to find them. Showtimes vary, use the Universal Studios or ask at one of the Guest Services kiosks.
- The Knight Bus: Meet the conductor of the Knight Bus and hear them crack funny jokes with their talking head. Found in London just outside Diagon Alley.
- Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees: Once you step through the brick wall to Diagon Alley, over on the side in Carkitt Market, there is an outdoor stage where performances happen. Known as the Singing Sorceress in the Wizarding World, Celestina sings “hit songs” with the Banshees throughout different times during the day. Find out why Celestina Warbeck is Molly Weasley’s favorite singer!
- Tales of Beedle the Bard: On the same stage, you’ll find the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts puppeteers re-enact The Tale of the Three Brothers. Young witches and wizards grow up listening to popular stories like this one by Beedle the Bard (think the wizard version of Aesop).
- The Frog Choir: Four Hogwarts students dressed in their robes representing each house sing a capella, along with the help of giant croaking frogs on cushions and a fellow student conductor.
- Triwizard Spirit Rally: The Triwizard Spirit Rally features a Hogwarts student introducing students from the two other wizarding schools, Durmstrang Institute and Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. Each school showcases their skills in a short performance.
The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle
Show times aren’t published in Universal’s in-park guide map, and the company only announces when the first performance of the evening will be on its website.
The Nighttime Lights shows typically start around 7:15 pm (8:15 after the Daylight Savings change), though this can be bumped up to as early as 6:45, and they last for approximately five minutes. The performances tend to occur every 20 minutes, with a final showing at park close and, if you’re really lucky, a no-we-really-mean-it final showing at 20 minutes after park close.
It’s the perfect way to end the day at Harry Potter World!

Hi! Both times I’ve gone to Universal I didn’t get an express pass. I’d recommend getting there early as possible and hitting the rides that you really want to do first. It depends on the crowds that day, so is a bigger risk not to get one, but I’ve had no trouble doing most rides in a day that I’ve wanted to after two visits without one.
